Nakia 9110


The Nokia 9110 Communicator is the updated model of the Nokia 9000 Communicator in the Communicator series. It has had a big change from the 9000 in that it weighs much less. The product line was later continued by the introduction of Nokia 9210 Communicator. The 9xxx Communicators introduced features which later evolved into smartphones.

Nokia 8110


Released in 1996, the Nokia 8110 was the first of Nokia's high-end, 8xxx series of phones. Its distinctive styling (which at its release earned it the nickname of "banana phone") was the first example of a so-called 'slider' form factor, with an active sliding cover over the buttons, which extended down to bring the microphone nearer the mouth when speaking. Three years after its release, the phone featured in the public eye with its appearance in the feature film The Matrix. However, in reality, the phone's sliding keypad cover was not spring loaded, but moved by hand; the spring loading feature was added for the film, and incorporated into the 7110, Nokia's second phone with a slider form factor.

Initially priced at a little bit less than EUR 1000, this was not a phone that fitted everybody's budget. It was designed for the new trendy business market, and had a couple unique things on board. For example the SSMS (Smart SMS) engine. Handsets could be updated OTA (Over The Air) with an intelligent menu structure, which allowed simple information input, input which was sended through a simple structured text message to an MT receiver. This station could interpret information and a structured text message back to the handset.

Nokia however cancelled the project in favor for the upcomming WAP standard. The 8110 will go in the history books as the only Nokia handset which has been shipped with SSMS.


Nokia 7110


The Nokia 7110 was the first mobile phone with a WAP browser. It was announced in February 1999 and released in October 1999.

The Nokia 7110 was the first Mobile Phone to have a WAP Browser (Wireless Application Protocol) or Microbrowser. It was also the first phone to feature Dynamic memory in the contacts, calendar and Messages and the first Nokia phone to feature SNAKE II, Racket (later in the Series 40 phones).

Additionally it was the first mass produced attempt at how ternary (three soft) key selections could be implemented. This early 'experimentation' has meant that the Nokia user interface has developed limited ambiguity.

The Nokia 7110 has a spring-loaded cover concealing the keypad. This is inspired by the film The Matrix in which Neo used a Nokia 8110 modified by the film's production crew to have such a cover.


Nokia 6110


The Nokia 6110 was a mobile phone made by Nokia from 1997 to 2001 for the GSM network. It is not to be confused with the Nokia 6110 Navigator.

It was a hugely popular follower of the Nokia 2110, and the first of the many Nokia 6xxx series‎ business-targeted phones. Main improvements over the 2110 were reduced size and improved talk time.

The phone shared the same platform as the Nokia 5110 targeted at the consumer market; unlike the 5110, however, it had the advanced user interface of the 2110 and featured an infra-red port. Another difference was the interchangeable faceplates, only available to the 5110.

Nokia 5110


Nokia 5110 is a Nokia GSM mobile phone model. It was released in 1998. At one point it was said to be the most popular mobile telephone in the world.

The consumer oriented 5110 shared the same platform as the Nokia 6110 targeted at the business market. It had a simpler user interface and lacked the infra-red port.

Although considered bulky by today's ultra-slim standards, the Nokia 5110 (also known as the Nokia 5146 on One2One (now T-Mobile), or nk402 on Orange in the UK) was rugged, had excellent battery life and was one of the first phones to feature the game "Snake". It performed all the basic mobile phone functions well. It was also one of the first phones with a replaceable faceplate, allowing users to customize their mobile. The Nokia 5110 was discontinued in 2001, being replaced by other slimmer, more compact mobiles. This is considered by many consumer analyst and technology experts as the mobile phone to change the game, making mobile phones and mobile phone technology easier to use and more accessible to the general public.

The Nokia 5110 is also well known for its interface and operational feasibility. It formed more advanced models in the Nokia family such as the 3210.

Nokia 3310



The Nokia 3310 is a dual band GSM900/1800 mobile phone. Released in the fourth quarter of 2000, it replaced the massively popular Nokia 3210. This phone sold extremely well, being one of the most successful phones with 126 million pieces sold.Several variants of the 3310 have been released, including the Nokia 3315, 3320, 3330, 3350, 3360, 3390 and 3395. In Eastern European countries, it was a very popular model.
The 3310 is a compact, but somewhat heavy (133 g) phone featuring an 84 x 48 monochrome display. It has a lighter 115g battery variant which has fewer features. For example- the 133g battery version has the start-up image of two hands touching while the 115g version doesn't. It is a slightly rounded rectangular unit that is typically held in the palm of a hand, with the buttons operated with the thumb. The blue button is the main button for selecting options, with "C" button as a "back" or "undo" button. Up and down buttons are used for navigation purposes. The on/off/profile button is a stiff black button located on the top of the phone. It has a very sturdy design which was a big contribution for its success. However, radiation is high with SAR = 0.96.
The 3310 is known for having many features built in. These include many utilities, such as a calculator, Nokia network monitor, stop watch and a reminder function. It has four games, 'Snake II', 'Pairs II', 'Space Impact', and 'Bantumi'. It was popular for SMS because it allowed long messages three times the size of a standard SMS. The phone also has voice dialing for the quick dialing of selected numbers.
The Nokia 3310 can be customized with interchangeable covers, and thousands of different designs have been produced by various companies. It also has over 35 ringtones built in with space for seven custom tones. These can either be downloaded, or can be composed by the user using the tone composer. The phone has different "profiles" which can adjust the phone to different sets of preferences. For example, there is silent mode where the phone will not ring when inappropriate to do so. Screensavers can be made from received picture messages. It has the option to set a reminder message that displays when it is turned on.

3315, 3390 and 3395

The Asian version of the 3310 is the Nokia 3315 which has some additional features:

  • A picture editor to edit pictures for use in SMS Picture messaging & screensavers on the phone
  • Timed profiles
  • Could use received ring tones as SMS tones
  • Fixed some of the bugs found in the 3310
  • Automatic keypad locking after specified time
  • Peanut-like inter-connected silicon keymat
  • Singaporean and Malaysian sold 3315s also had a blue backlight for the LCD screen and keypad, as opposed to green.
  • Similar design to its successor (The Nokia 3410)

The 3315 was also released in Australia. Most versions of the 3310 could be upgraded to include the additional features of the 3315 by using a data cable.

There are two North American variants of the 3310; one is the Nokia 3390, which operates on GSM 1900. The Nokia 3395 is an updated version of the 3390 which includes the additional features of the Asian 3315 model, and it has poor reception if you are in a GSM 850 area.

WAP-enhanced models (3330 and 3350)

The Nokia 3330 was basically a 3310 with a SMS-based WAP capability, animated screensavers, a pinball game named 'Bumper', and phonebook in the phone memory (100 entries) as opposed to being stored on SIM-card in earlier models. It also has the capability of downloading game packs via WAP (Snake II mazes, Bumper tables, Space Impact chapters). Without true GPRS connectivity the WAP feature proved unpopular and the version was unable to replace the 3310 in the European market.

An Asia Pacific-only version, known as the Nokia 3350, was in essence an improved 3330 with WAP, rhythmic backlight alert, animated screensavers, two-way Navi-Key, dedicated call and hang buttons, Chinese lunar calendar and a 96x65-pixel screen. Some 3350s have back covers that feature a photo-insert window, allowing users to put personal pictures from photographs, magazine cut-outs, etc.

AMPS/D-AMPS-based versions (3320 and 3360)

The Nokia 3360 and 3320 are related models designed for the U.S. and Canadian markets respectively. They are externally similar to the 3310 and 3390, but use Digital AMPS ("TDMA")/AMPS technology rather than GSM.

Like the Asian 3350, they include two dedicated call and hang buttons and two soft keys. They also feature an infrared port. Unlike the 3390, the 3360 and 3320 do not support voice dialing. At 136 gram each, they are also slightly heavier than the 3390, which weighs 119 gram.

Modifications

Old Nokia 3310s (which are often available for a small fraction of their original price) are frequently sought out by hobbyists for their screens. These are graphical LCDs with a resolution of 84x48, and include a Philips PCD8544 controller which is easily controlled using an SPI bus.

Nokia 1011


The Nokia 1011 was the first mass-produced GSM phone. The typenumer refers to the launch date, 10 November 1992. The black handset measured 195 x 60 x 45mm and featured a monochrome display and an extendable antenna. The memory could hold 99 phone numbers. It did not yet employ Nokia's characteristic ringtone: that was only introduced in 1994. The phone operated in the 900 MHz band. The Nokia 1011 continued production until 1994, when it introduced the Nokia 2100 model as successor.

Siemens AG

Siemens AG is Europe's largest engineering conglomerate and the largest electronics company in the world. Siemens' international headquarters are located in Berlin and Munich, Germany. The company is a conglomerate of three main business sectors: Industry, Energy and Health care with a total of 15 Divisions. Worldwide, Siemens and its subsidiaries employ approximately 480,000 people in nearly 190 countries and reported global revenue of $ 110.82 billion as of 2008. Siemens AG is listed on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange, and has been listed on the New York Stock Exchange since March 12, 2001.

Siemens was founded by Werner von Siemens on 12 October 1847. Based on the telegraph, his invention used a needle to point to the sequence of letters, instead of using Morse code. The company – then called Telegraphen-Bauanstalt von Siemens & Halske – opened its first workshop on October 12. In 1848, the company built the first long-distance telegraph line in Europe; 500 km from Berlin to Frankfurt am Main. In 1850 the founder's younger brother, Sir William Siemens (born Carl Wilhelm Siemens), started to represent the company in London. In the 1850s, the company was involved in building long distance telegraph networks in Russia. In 1855, a company branch headed by another brother, Carl von Siemens, opened in St Petersburg, Russia. In 1867, Siemens completed the monumental Indo-European (Calcutta to London) telegraph line. In 1881, a Siemens AC Alternator driven by a watermill was used to power the world's first electric street lighting in the town of Godalming, United Kingdom. The company continued to grow and diversified into electric trains and light bulbs. In 1890, the founder retired and left the company to his brother Carl and sons Arnold and Wilhelm. Siemens & Halske (S&H) was incorporated in 1897. In 1907 Siemens had 34,324 employees and was the second-largest company in the Germany empire by number of employees. In 1919, S&H and two other companies jointly formed the Osram lightbulb company. A Japanese subsidiary was established in 1923. During the 1920s and 1930s, S&H started to manufacture radios, television sets, and electron microscopes.

Management

Peter Löscher (formerly of Merck) is the current president and the CEO as of July 1, 2007.. He succeeded Dr. Klaus Kleinfeld after the scandal charges of bribery against Siemens. Gerhard Cromme is the current chairman of the supervisory board of Siemens AG. He succeeded Dr. Heinrich von Pierer on April 26, 2007.

2007 Price fixing fine

In January 2007 Siemens was fined €396 million by the European Commission for rigging EU electricity markets through a cartel involving 11 companies, among which ABB, Alstom, Fuji, Hitachi Japan, AE Power Systems, Mitsubishi Electric Corp, Schneider, Areva, Toshiba and VA Tech [17]. According to the Commission, "between 1988 and 2004, the companies rigged bids for procurement contracts, fixed prices, allocated projects to each other, shared markets and exchanged commercially important and confidential information." Siemens was given the highest fine of €396 million, more than half of the total, for its alleged leadership role in the incident.

Bribery case

Siemens is currently being investigated for serious bribery, involving Heinz-Joachim Neubürger, former chief financial officer, Karl-Hermann Baumann, another former CFO and exchairman, and Johannes Feldmayer, a former management board member. [18]. The investigation has found questionable payments of roughly €1.3 billion, or $1.9 billion, from 2002 to 2006 that have triggered a broad range of inquiries in Germany, the United States and many other countries.

In May 2007 a German court convicted two former executives of paying about €6 million in bribes from 1999 to 2002 to help Siemens win natural gas turbine supply contracts with Enel, an Italian energy company. The contracts were valued at about €450 million. Siemens was fined €38 million.

Siemens has tightened its internal controls, and implemented strict compliance and anti-corruption measures throughout the company.

Through an American sub-organisation known as the Siemens Foundation, Siemens also devotes funds to rewarding students and AP teachers. One of its main programs is the Siemens Westinghouse Competition in maths, science, and technology, which annually grants scholarships up to US$100,000 to both individual and team entrants.
